Terence Blanchard

Terence Oliver Blanchard ( born March 13, 1962 in New Orleans) is an American jazz trumpeter and composer.

Life and work

Blanchard comes from a musical family ( his father was as a member of the Harlem Harmony Kings ). He received a comprehensive classical education: the age of four he began taking piano lessons, and later joined trumpet lessons and with 15 years of composition lessons in the "New Orleans Center of Creative Arts ", where he was taught between 1978 and 1980 by Ellis Marsalis. From 1980 to 1982 he played in the band of Lionel Hampton. Since his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1982 to 1986 (succeeding Wynton Marsalis and musical director ), he is considered one of the leading trumpeters. In the late 1980s he had his own quartet with Blakey sideman and alto saxophonist Donald Harrison ( albums Black Pearl, Crystal Stair ). They took et al 1986 Eric Dolphy / Booker Little Remembered, Vol 1, 2 with the same rhythm section like this ( Mal Waldron, Richard Davis, Ed Blackwell ). In 1993 he released his album The Billie Holiday Songbook, 1999 Wandering Moon with Branford Marsalis, Dave Holland. For this last album, he was chosen by Down Beat readers about the artist and trumpet player of the year. With the Brazilian Ivan Lins The Heart Speaks in 1996 he took on ( Grammy nomination for " Best Latin Jazz Performance" ).

Blanchard wrote the soundtrack to several films by Spike Lee, Jungle Fever (1991 ), Malcolm X ( 1992), Summer of Sam (1999) and Inside Man (2006). Since 1987, he played in Bill Lee's soundtrack for Spike Lee films like Do the Right Thing ( 1998) or Mo 'Better Blues ( 1990) ( which earned him a Grammy nomination ) and in the documentary film When the Levees broke (2006) about the disaster his hometown of New Orleans in Hurricane Katrina, in which he also appears. He also composed the music for the movies Original Sin (directed by Michael Christofer, 2000), Glitter ( with Mariah Carey, 2001), in the inner circle (directed by Daniel Algrant, 2001) and Gia - Price of Beauty (1998). He was also involved in the soundtrack to the animated film The Princess and the Frog ( 2009).

In 2010 he received the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo Performance category for his title " Dancin ' 4 Chicken". He is currently artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California.
