Terence Cooke

Terence Cardinal Cooke James (* March 1, 1921 in New York, USA, † October 6, 1983 ibid ) was Archbishop of New York.

Life

Terence James Cooke studied at the Archbishop's St. Joseph 's Seminary in New York's Dunwoodie Catholic theology and philosophy and received on 1 December 1945, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked for two years as a pastor in the Bronx, before he was released from 1947 to 1949 for the purpose of advanced studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington.

From 1949 to 1954 he taught at Fordham University in New York and provided tasks in the church ministry. In the years 1954 to 1956 as director coordinated the youth ministry of the Catholic charities and clubs in the Archdiocese of New York. From 1957 to 1965 he was Vicar of the Bronx and Manhattan and personal secretary of Francis Cardinal Spellman. In the years 1958 to 1961 he was also Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese and 1958-1965 Baudezernent of the Archdiocese.

1965 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Summa and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New York. He received his episcopal consecration Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman on 13 December of the same year. Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of San Francisco, Joseph Thomas McGucken, and the New York Koadjutorerzbischof John Joseph Maguire. In 1968, Cooke, Archbishop of New York and American military bishop. In addition, Terence James Cooke was born on April 28, 1969 by Paul VI. taken as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in the College of Cardinals. He belonged to the Kardinalsrat for the study of organizational and economic problems of the Holy See.

In 1972 he was the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem, Eugène Tisserant, appointed the first Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Eastern United States Holy grave in Jerusalem, based in New York.

Unofficial reports state that he was heavily involved in the conclave of October 1978 in conjunction with the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Franz König in bringing about the election of the Polish cardinal Karol Wojtyla as Pope.

Terence James Cooke died on 6 October 1983 in New York at the consequences of a cancer suffering and was buried in the crypt of the local St. Patrick 's Cathedral.

The beatification process was initiated. He was officially declared a " Servant of God " in 1992.
