Teresa, Contessa Guiccioli

Teresa Guiccioli (* 1800, † 1873) was an Italian noblewoman and the mistress of the famous poet Lord Byron. She was a member of the Italian separatist organization, the Carbonari. Together with Byron, she was exiled to Pisa, where she lived until 1823. After his death, she wrote a book about her lover: Lord Byron 's Life in Italy ( original title: Vie de Lord Byron en Italie).

Reception

In the adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo, the French writer Alexandre Dumas put her with the figure of the Baroness Danglars a literary monument.

The protagonist of a novel by the Nobel laureate JM Coetzee, shame, writes an opera about Byron from the perspective of Guicciolis.
