Termen

Terms

Terms ( Walliser German: Tärmu ) is a municipality in the district of Brig in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The ski area and the resort Ross forest also belong to the municipality terms.

History

In the 13th century sparked terms of the early church Naters going on. The origin of the parish name " terms " is not entirely clear. Since there are also mineral springs in the municipality, is a Roman origin of the name possible ( terms, spa or thermal ). Also conceivable by Roman influence, and probably more likely is the derivation of terms - terminus ( end ), which would be due to the geographical location.

Already in 1500 stood where now is the village square, a chapel. In the years 1911-1913 it was built under the direction of architect Kalbermatten from Sion the present parish church, whose patron is St. Joseph. It was consecrated in November 1913 by Bishop Julius Mauritius Abbet. The nave is supported by granite columns from the Simplon area and is built in neo-Romanesque style. Besides the parish church there are five other chapels in the municipality.

In earlier times, large amounts shale were mined above and below ground for house roofs. Today the company Pearlwater wins the richly mineralized spring water which exits on Termer ground.
