Ternaard

Ternaard is a village in the municipality Dongeradeel in the Dutch province of Friesland.

It is located in the northeast of the Dutch province of Friesland and is located about 8 kilometers north of Dokkum. The village is close to the Wadden Sea and has 1410 inhabitants. Thus, it is one of the larger villages of the municipality.

History

From the 8th century many names for Ternaard are known. The first is tuning ford, although it is not entirely clear what tuning relates. One possibility would be either a person or a Germanic god. The importance of ford, however, is easier to clarify, it describes a terp. Later the name Tunawert, Thunewerd, Tonauwer, Tijnnawerdt, Tennaard and Tonnaard are used synonymously for Ternaard.

Prior to 1984 completed in Friesland territorial reform Ternaard belonged to Westdongeradeel and had its own meetinghouse. 1984 Westdongeradeel were eventually merged with Oostdongeradeel Dokkum and the new municipality Dongeradeel.

In Ternaard itself there are a kindergarten, a primary school, a family practice and a nursing home. In addition, it houses among others a Billiardklub, a football club, a tennis club and a volleyball club. Buses connect with Ternaard Dokkum and Leeuwarden.

The local church dates from the 19th century, and the interior is decorated in the style of the 17th century. The last service in the church was held in October 2007. The congregation was Ternaard namely merged with a nearby parish. The church has since been sold.
