Teroldego

The red variety Teroldego is an indigenous variety from the north of Italy. It comes from the Trentino, where she mainly in the Piana Rotaliana (Campo Rotaliano ) in the Adige valley at an altitude of about 220 m above sea level. the sea, where the Noce flows into the Adige, to almost 600 acres (as of 1999) is grown. The Noce has transported over time stony debris from the mountains to the plains. This lean gravel, together with the microclimate favorable growth conditions. The adjacent rocks save daytime the heat and give it off at night.

Other stocks are available in Istria, on Lake Garda, in California (→ Viticulture in California ) and New Zealand.

For the name, there are several interpretations:

  • It was named after the town of Teroldeghe the community Mezzo Lombardo ( the most likely interpretation ),
  • Teroldego was derived from the German name Tiroler Gold,
  • The name alludes to the characteristic Teernote.

The vine was first mentioned in 1383 and the wine to have been passed at the Council of Trent. In the Piana Rotaliana the vine is cultivated since the 14th century.

In 2004, the " Istituto di San Michele all'Adige agrario " Fondazione Edmund Mach confirmed today in Conegliano a close genetic relationship of the first degree with the varieties Lagrein and Marzemino as well as the variety Dureza a connection to the French Syrah.

The late maturing variety produces fruity, dark red wines with relatively low Tanninausprägung that may be susceptible to reduction. It is to a small extent at risk of vine disease powdery mildew, downy mildew of grapevine and raw rot. Their wines find their way into the Denominazione di origine controllata wines of Teroldego Rotaliano and Sorni.
