Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana
The Terrebonne Parish (French: Paroisse de Terrebonne ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 111 680 inhabitants and a population density of 34.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Houma.
Geography
The Parish is located in southeastern Louisiana, bordered to the south by the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 5387 square kilometers, of which 2137 square miles are water. It is bordered by the following Parishes:
History
The Terrebonne Parish was formed in 1822 from parts of Lafourche Parish. The term Terrebonne comes from French and means something like good country.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Terrebonne Parish 104 503 people in 35 997 households and 27 393 families. The population density was 32 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 74.07 percent White, 17.79 percent Black or African American, 5.29 percent Native American, 0.81 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.54 percent from other races groups; 1.48 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.56 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 35 997 households out of which 39.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 14.1 percent were single mothers, 23.9 percent were non-families, 19.3 percent of all households and 7.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.29 persons.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 29.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 9.7 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,235, and the median income for a family was $ 39,912. Males had a median income of $ 34,869, women $ 20,705. The per capita income was $ 16,051. 15.8 percent of families 19.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 25.9 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 17.6 percent of those 65 years.
