The Territoire de Belfort initially had a special status with a administrateur, who stood in rank between a prefect and sub-prefect, and a commission whose members ( commissaries ) were chosen according to the rules of the General Councils.

After the reincorporation of the department of Haut-Rhin in 1919 was the Territoire de Belfort not reunited with this. In 1922 the official name of the state representatives of administrateur du territoire de Belfort to préfet you territoire de Belfort - still territoire with kleingeschriebenem generic name - changed, which is the only official act which confirmed the finality of the existence of the Territoire de Belfort.
