Terry Butcher

Terence Ian " Terry " Butcher ( born December 28, 1958 in Singapore ) is an English football coach and former football player.

The 1.92 m wide central defender Butcher was not famous for his football skills, yet he was one of England's most solid defensive players. He began his professional career in 1978 at Ipswich Town and reached with the club in the first year the quarter-finals in the European Cup Winners' Cup, but what they lost to FC Barcelona. In 1981, he was with Ipswich UEFA Cup winners against the Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. On the way to the final Ipswich defeated the 1st FC Cologne in the semifinals. A year later, he took part with the English national football team at the FIFA World Cup 1982 in Spain.

After his participation in the World Cup 1986 in Mexico Butcher moved from Ipswich to Scotland to Glasgow Rangers. After he had not participated in the European Football Championship in Germany in 1988, he returned to the Football World Cup 1990 in Italy back again to the English national team. Legendary was his appearance at the crucial qualifier in Sweden when he because of his fighting spirit by holding the whole game with extremely bleeding laceration and blutdurchtränktem shirt and this offered a great achievement. He was also in spite of the injury is not too bad to take every head ball in attack. Overall Butcher participated from 1980 to 1990 in 77 international matches in which he scored three goals. In seven games, he was captain of the national team.

His career ended in 1992/93 season at Sunderland. Today he is a full-time coach of Scottish Premier League club Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Previously, he had the FC Motherwell and trained the Sydney FC for several years in Australia and worked as an assistant to the Scottish national team.
