Terry McHugh

Terry McHugh ( born August 22, 1963 in Clonmel, County Tipperary ) is a retired Irish javelin thrower.

McHugh was tenth at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 and seventh at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1994. He qualified for four Olympic Games - Seoul 1998 ( 22 ), 1992 Barcelona ( 27 ), 1996 Atlanta ( 29 ) and Sydney 2000 ( 20 ). He won in unbroken succession 21 national titles from 1984 to 2004.

His personal best was 82.75, achieved in August 2000 in London. This is still an Irish record.

McHugh also participated in two Winter Olympiads - 1992 in Albertville ( 32 in the two-man bob ) and 1998 in Nagano ( 27 and 30 in the two- man and four ).

He became close friends with his bobsled teammates and former discus throw champion Garry Power ( whose family from Dungarvan, Co. Waterford came ), who now teaches as a teacher at a school in England. McHugh lives in Switzerland with his wife Daniela ( a former Swiss 400 meters runner ) and a son.

After the sailors David Wilkins, he is the second Irish athlete who participated in five Olympic Games.
