Testosterone - 17beta - dehydrogenase ( 17β -HSD -3) is the enzyme that catalyzes the last step in the biosynthesis of testosterone, the hydrogenation of androstenedione. The reaction takes place in vertebrates and some invertebrates, homologous proteins are found also in parasites and fungi. Mutations in the HSD17B3 gene can this lead to 17β -HSD - 3 deficiency and to a form of male pseudohermaphroditism.
