Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 38-43 millimeters. While the hind wings are almost monochrome gray, a gray drawing is on the front wings can be seen. In Basalfeld there is a dark band, which connects directly to the internal cross blemish. Whatever the flaws are relatively small, if you compare it for example with those of the Eyes Owl Spinners ( Tethea ocularis ). The flaws are colored white. There are also black shapes of the moths ( melanism ). These are solid black, have conspicuous white blemish and are referred to as f.albigensis Warnecke.

Occurrence

The animals come in Europe, except in the far north and in parts of the Mediterranean region, east to Japan frequently and are widespread. They prefer the edges of forests and clearings, but also in tracts of land with hedges or other copses and in scrubby heaths and moors, they can be found. The type does not like hot, dry areas.

Way of life

Flight times and caterpillars

The moths fly in two generations from late April to July and from July to August. The generations overlap is usually made in their time of flight. The caterpillars from the eggs of the first generation can be found from August to September, the second in July of the following year.

Food of the caterpillars

The food plants of the caterpillar are Espen (Populus tremula ) and other poplars (Populus ) and willows.

Development

The caterpillars live cocooned between two sheets, they overwinter as a pupa on the ground between leaves before they hatch the following spring.
