N, N, N ', N' -tetramethylethylenediamine is a chemical compound selected from the group of aliphatic amines.
Properties
N, N, N ', N' -tetramethylethylenediamine is a flammable clear colorless liquid with an amine-like odor, which is readily soluble in water. It decomposes when heated, whereby nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide produced.
Use
Tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA ) is a polymerization catalyst. Therefore, it is for example used in conjunction with ammonium persulfate for the polymerization of acrylamide during the preparation of polyacrylamide gels.
TMEDA is also used as an additive in Deaggregations lithiation reactions. Thus, the addition of TMEDA allows high conversions at the Ortholithiierung of benzyl alcohol with n- BuLi in n-hexane.
Safety
The vapors of N, N, N ', N' -tetramethylethylenediamine can form (19 ° C, ignition temperature 145 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
