Tetrarchy (Judea)

The Herodian Tetrarchy was a tetrarchisches government system, which was introduced after the death of Herod the Great in 4 BC in Palestine.

After the death of Herod in 4 BC, his kingdom by Augustus among his sons Herod Antipas ( Galilee and Perea ), Herod Archelaus ( Judea and Samaria) and Herod Philip ( Ituraea, Golan, Trachonitis ) was divided.

After the death of Herod Philip AD 34, who remained childless, got his territory by donation first at the Roman administration in Syria, and later as well as the territory of Herod Antipas after his banishment to 39 AD Herod Agrippa I., a grandson of Herod the Great.

The Herod Archelaus area came after his banishment already 6 AD under Roman administration. The Roman procurators were the legate of Syria regime (cf. lists of the Roman governor in Judea and Syria). Herod Agrippa I took over from 41 AD their territory.
