Tex Winter

Morice Fredrick "Tex " Winter ( born February 25, 1922) is a retired American basketball coach. He won nine NBA titles as assistant to the multiple NBA champion Phil Jackson and is a co-inventor of the triangle offense. In addition, winter trained for a year, the San Diego Rockets in the NBA.

Career

Winter led in the 1950s to a " triangle offense " ( triangle - attack strategy ) and wrote about it in 1962 a book of the same. When the young coach Phil Jackson and he was assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls in the 1980s, Jackson took up his ideas. As the latter was head coach, he made winter to his assistant. Together they implemented the triangle offense and won with the Bulls led by Michael Jordan to Scottie Pippen six times and later the Los Angeles Lakers for Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant three NBA titles.

Winter 1998 was honored for his life's work with the " John Bunn Award" from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Phil Jackson, who won eleven NBA titles with Winters " triangle offense ", described Winter as a model and "Basketball God ". In 2011 he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Winter is married to Nancy. They have a son named Russ.
