TeX4ht

TeX4ht is a powerful and very largely configurable converter by Eitan M. Gurari ( * 1947, † 2009), which can convert TeX and LaTeX documents into HTML and into a series of XML formats. He also serves in particular for converting ( La) TeX documents in the formats of word processors.

The program is released as free software under the LaTeX Project Public License ( LPPL ).

History

In the 1990s, developed, mastered TeX4ht originally only the conversion of ( La) TeX to HTML. It was possible, scientific documents that had been prepared by using ( La) TeX for print output to provide for publication on the World Wide Web for display in the web browser. In particular, the possibility to insert references as hypertext in a document very widely supported.

Over time step were added more and more XML-based formats step. Currently, XHTML, MathML, OpenDocument, DocBook and TEI are supported; also JavaHelp can be generated.

TeX4ht is now preconfigured in all TeX distributions available.

After the death of Eitan M. Gurari the program of Radhakrishnan CV and Karl Berry continues to cultivate.

Operation

Unlike other converters, in particular LaTeX2HTML or TTH, no attempt is made to implement the syntax of the respective markup languages . TeX4ht not even parse the ( La) TeX document, but leaves that to ( La) TeX. Here, a DVI file is generated, further implements its TeX4ht in the sequence.

This approach offers the advantage that, in principle, each compiling ( La) TeX document can be processed by TeX4ht. Extensions through add-on packages or user additions (own commands and environments, extensions for literature management with BibTeX ) therefore provide basically no problem when converting dar.

Mathematical formulas and other characters that can not be represented as text in the target format are converted and integrated into graphics.

Using ODT, the native text format of OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice Writer, LaTeX documents can easily be converted into the format of Microsoft Word doc.
