Texas Senate

The Senate of Texas (English: Texas Senate ) is the upper house of the existing along with the Texas House of Representatives bicameral Parliament of Texas. It consists of 31 members, each of whom represents one of the 31 electoral districts of the State of Texas, each with about 672,000 voters. The election of members is not limited. The members of the Senate meeting in the Texas State Capitol in Austin.

At the beginning of 2011, two parties are represented in the Texas Senate, the Republican Party with 19 senators and the Democratic Party with twelve senators.

The Lieutenant Governor and also the President of the Senate since the 21 January 2003 David Dewhurst from the Republicans, in his absence, he will be represented since January 11, 2011 by Republican Steve Ogden (President Pro Tempore ) from Bryan, who in the fifth constituency was chosen.

The Senate President shall preside at the meetings, calls the debate speakers on, appoint committee members and chairs of the respective committees shall refer draft laws in certain committees and sets meeting schedule. If a vote ends in a tie, he may give the casting vote.

Unlike other legislative assemblies in the United States there are in the Senate of Texas no spokesperson for the majority party or the opposition. The office of President pro tempore may be regarded as the second most important office in the Senate, it is not reserved for a particular party, but may be exercised by any deputy of each fraction, regardless of whether it belongs to the majority party or the opposition. It is administered generally by the oldest member of the Senate. The president pro tempore represents the Lieutenant Governor in the absence and in extraordinary sessions.
