Teylers Stichting

The Teylers Stichting ( German: Teylers Foundation ) is a Dutch foundation for social and academic purposes.

History

It was founded with the legacy of Haarlemmermeer cloth and silk merchant, banker and philanthropist Pieter Teyler van der Hulst in the 18th century. The order was "ter ondersteuning van behoeftigen en ter aanmoediging van godsdienst, wetenschap s art " ( German: " to support the needy and to promote the religion, science and art "). As Teyler van der Hulst died in 1778, he was without children or close family. He determined in his will as the legacy should be used. He left money for different individuals, the church and for the aforementioned non-profit purposes. Alleged members of the family have claimed that the will of Teyler should apply only 100 years, and the remaining money should revert to the family members. Such claims were not recognized by any court. The Foundation was founded by five friends from Teyler who were his executors, and also the first directors ( board members ) of the Foundation.

Control and works

The Foundation is managed by a board of five directors, who shall be appointed by the remaining Board members. The first five directors were Teylers friends:

  • Gerard Hugaart (1778 - 1791)

  • J. J. van Es
  • J. E. Trip ( Treasurer)

The Foundation was responsible for the Teylers Museum, the Teylers Hofje ( Teylers poorhouse ) and the two companies Teylers Eerste Genootschap ( Teylers First Company ), which focuses on theological questions and Teylers Tweede Genootschap ( Teylers Second Company ), dedicated to scientific issues employed. The Foundation is also responsible for the Teylers chair at the University of Leiden.

The guide of the museum was left to a Kastelein and later director of the museum (not to be confused with the Foundation directors). In 1981, the direction of the Museum to a separate foundation was (Stichting tot Beheer van Instandhouding Teylers Museum, Foundation for management and conservation of Teylers Museum ) in accordance with a requirement of the National Authority passed. The Authority then recognized the museum as a museum of national importance and could therefore subsidize. Teylers Stichting appoints two of the six members of the new foundation. The Teylers Stichting includes the building. As determined in the will, the Teylers Stichting has its headquarters in Fundatiehuis.
