History

Dance party in the GDR

1955, " was first Festival of German folk dance " oriented in Rudolstadt. On the one hand, socialism should receive a folkloric primer. Secondly, so that the German unit was summoned, a goal that at least rhetorically still pursued the Ulbricht government at this time. Finally German tradition should be provided for " American barbarism " as rock and roll and jazz. Rudolstadt recommended - as first also Wernigerode - due to its location in the center of Germany and the old town with overlying Castle, which was not damaged by the war. The all-German orientation of the " Dance Festival " accounted for at the following festivals, held every two years. Instead, groups came from Eastern Europe. Stylistically changed until the late 1980s, little: It stayed with traditional folk music and dance groups in traditional costumes.

TFF after 1990

The first festival in 1991 had been given a completely new orientation. Well mainly alternative folk music should dominate. The Dance and Folk Festival - as a fusion of ancient dance festival with folk music - realized now virtually the whole German idea, but without ideological superstructure. Rudolstadt provided for in addition to its central location again now organizing experience. More than 90 groups and soloists from 22 countries came to this first TFF.

In subsequent years, until the mid- 1990s, the festival continued to grow. In the past three years the number of visitors were depending on weather averaged over 75,000. 2013 occurred from July 4 to July 8, about 70 bands on more than 20 stages on, further played around 60 groups and soloists ( numbers of 4 May 2013) in the old streets. You can dance in the Old Town Hall, in the City Hall and in the dance tent at Heine Park ( on the right side of the hall ), where there is also a children's party for just watching, listening and Educational Sites; also held workshops and lectures. Parts of the festival are now broadcast live or delayed by Germany Kultur, Germany Radio, MDR Figaro, HR2, WDR 3 and Bavaria 2 and other European radio stations. According to the organizers came in 2013 around 87,000 visitors.

In order for a lack of space to meet the threat of capping visitor numbers, the organizers have presented the festival since 2011, one day; it now starts on the 1st Thursday in July and lasts until the following Sunday evening.

Organization and costs
