Thaddeus Mann

Thaddeus Robert Rudolph Mann ( born December 4, 1908 in Lviv, † November 27, 1993 in Cambridge ) was a biochemist. His main area of ​​work was the reproductive biology.

Life and work

Thaddeus man was the son of William and Emilia man. His brothers were Roman man and Kasimir man, his uncle, opera singer Joseph man. He studied medicine at the University of Lviv and was there in 1935 received his doctorate of medicine. A year earlier, he married Cecilia Lutwak. In 1935 man a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation and studied at the Molteno Institute of the University of Cambridge. There, obtained in 1937 the degree Ph. D..

From 1937 to 1944 he was promoted through a " Beit Memorial Fellowship for Medical Research ." During this time he was on the Molteno Institute in Cambridge working. Until 1953 worked as a research assistant for the Agricultural Research Council. 1950 was the man Doctor of Science ( Sc.D. ) From 1953 to 1976 he worked as director of the ARC Unit of Reproductive Physiology and Biochemistry. In the years 1967-1976 he held the Marshall -Walton Professor of Physiology and Reproduction.

For his scientific achievements Thaddeus man has received numerous honors and awards. In 1951 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, in 1962 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1980 foreign member of the Polska Akademia Nauk.

Foundations

For the 100th anniversary of the Academy of Agriculture in Krakow, the couple husband founded the " Cecylia and Tadeusz Man Foundation ", which assumes the financial support for scientific trips abroad for young scientists and purchase of chemicals, laboratory equipment and scientific books and journals. He also founded the Foundation " Thaddeus man Studentship - Eastern and Central Europe " for students from Poland, studying in Cambridge.
