Thalassoma

Moon wrasse ( Thalassoma lunar )

Thalassoma is a genus of wrasses ( Labridae ). Species of this genus live in the Mediterranean in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The fish live in rocky and coral reefs. Thalassoma species have the typical elongated, cylindrical body of Junkerlippfische ( Julidinae ) and are eight to 46 inches long. As with many wrasses Juvenile, males and females are very different, dyed always very colorful. Like most wrasses Thalassoma are the types of free -spawners with no low parental care and lay off their eggs and sperm into the open water. Young fish Thalassoma some species, such as the head of the blue - Junkers ( Thalassoma bifasciatum ) and of the crescent - Junkers ( Thalassoma lunar ) live like Anemonefish between the tentacles of large sea anemones, and are thus protected from predators.

In addition to these 28 species include the two species of bird wrasse ( Gomphosus ) from a phylogenetic perspective to the genre. Thalassoma can be divided into eight clearly distinct clades in which species from certain maritime regions such as the Indo-Pacific, western or eastern Atlantic are summarized. Gomphosus is available as a sister group of an Indo-Pacific clade within Thalassoma.
