Thallium (I ) sulfate is a chemical compound from the group of thallium compounds and sulfates.
Production and representation
Thallium (I ) sulfate can be obtained by reaction of thallium with sulfuric acid.
Properties
Thallium (I ) sulfate is a white odorless non-flammable solid. Upon heating, the compound decomposes with thallium oxides and sulfur oxides are released. Its crystal structure is isomorphic to that of potassium sulphate ( orthorhombic with a = 7.808, b = 5.929, c = 10.665 A).
Use
Thallium (I ) sulfate has been since the 1920s to about the mid-1970s as a rodenticide ( colloquially: rat poison ) used eg by Bayer AG in the products Zelio poison grains ( poison wheat, content of active substance 2% thallium sulphate; packaging with red warning color ) and Zelio paste ( active substance content of 2.5% thallium sulphate; packaging with blue warning color ). Today it is no longer generally accepted, but may be in special need case, with specific approval of the Federal Authority for rat and Mäusevertilgung in enclosed spaces (ie intradomal ) are used. It is, however, become obsolete by the coumarin derivatives of the second generation.
