Thames House

The Thames House since 1994 has been the headquarters of the British Secret Service MI5.

The two-part building is located in the British capital London on the north bank of the River Thames at the height of Lambeth Bridge ( at the junction with Millbank Horseferry Road). It was up in 1930 by the company John Mowlem & Co built in the neoclassical tradition of Edwin Lutyens in 1929. The plans were drawn by Sir Frank Baines from the Government 's Office of Works. The area was previously considered poor, the former building was on January 7, 1928 largely destroyed by a flood. Simultaneously with the Thames House some other representative Verwaltungsbäude (including the similar Nobel House on the other side of Horseferry Road) were built in the neighborhood. The Thames House initially served as the headquarters of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd ( ICI), later it was used eg by the Warburg Library, the International Nickel Company of Canada and the Department of Energy. Following extensive modernization and conversions since 1994, it serves as the headquarters of the Security Service ( MI5 domestic intelligence ).
