History
The village was built around the castle Thanstein, built by the knights of Zenger. Thanstein belonged to Rentamt Amberg and the district court Nine castle of the Electorate of Bavaria. In Thanstein the counts of Holnstein had an open Hofmark. Incorporations
In 1945 or 1946 the then independent municipality mountain was incorporated. On May 1, 1978 Kulz was added with the incorporated in 1945 or 1946 parts of territories of Weislitz.

On May 1, 1976, in the course of municipal reform, the formerly independent communities Dieterskirchen, Neukirchen - Balbini, Thanstein and Schwarzhofen have joined together to manage community Nine vorm Wald.
