The Thatbinnyu temple in Old Bagan was probably inaugurated by King Alaungsithu 1144 and marks the beginning of the middle period of construction in Bagan.

The temple is 61 m high and thus the tallest building in Bagan. The building consists of two superimposed set blocks, each with two storeys. On both blocks sit three receding terraces, whose vertices are decorated with small stupas. The top section is a shikhara. To the east two blocks is set before an entrance hall.

The whorls in the two lower storeys, the center of which is massive, served as living quarters for monks. In the middle of the third floor there is the sanctuary with a large seated Buddha, the fourth floor of books and sacred objects were kept.
