Thaton

Thaton ( Burmese သထုံမြို့, sa htum mrui ) is a town in Mon State on the northern half of the Tenasserim peninsula in southern Burma.

History

Thaton was formerly a center of the Kingdom of the Sun, which differs from the delta of the Ayeyarwady ( Irrawaddy ) ran almost to Cambodia. The city is still regarded in modern times by some Burmese, Thai and Mon as a place of identification, what one a partially historical Kingdom Suvarnabhumi ( "The Golden Land" ) claimed. Today this is claimed by many ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, but rejected by scholars. Suvarnabhumi is ( 3rd century BC ) in southern India believed by edicts of the king Asok, but not in Southeast Asia.

In the kingdom of Dvaravati Thaton was an important port on the Gulf of Martaban, the trade with India and Ceylon operation. King Anawrahta of Pegu conquered Thaton in 1057.

Location

Sediments led over the centuries to the fact that Thaton about 16 km from the coast is now removed, and a sleepy town on the railway line Bago - Mottama ( Martaban ) is.
