Thaur

Thaur is a municipality with 3778 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Innsbruck Land, Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Hall in Tirol.

Its proximity to the city of Innsbruck, the community is subject to a rather large settlement pressure, but the peasant village center could be well preserved. Thaur is among other things also a popular residential community today.

Geography

Thaur is located at the eastern foot of the northern chain, on the old road from Innsbruck to villages Hall and is one of the MARTHA villages. The community forms a scattered village on a hillside, which is mainly located north of this road. The highest point of the municipality is 2,668 meters with the rear Bachofen tip.

History

The name Thaur possibly comes from the Illyrian language and means "rock". Another name origin could represent the Romanche " Taur " or " Tgaura " ( goat), and thus indicate grazing.

An urn box from the Bronze Age indicates that the area was inhabited around 1000 BC. 827 Thaur was first mentioned as " taurane ".

The castle of Thaur was expanded in the 13th century and was a judicial seat. After a fire, and a momentous earthquake are now only ruins exist.

Customs

In Thaur the nativity tradition is very important. In almost every house there is a nativity scene. Many artists from the village have at building - deals mountains, carving figures or painting the backgrounds - mostly oriental. The best known family of artists are the Giner. The customs are with nativity scenes and running Muller maintained ( a carnival tradition ).

The nearest railway station is located in Rum, where a connection to the S -Bahn Tyrol is. With the Innsbruck airport a flight connection exists in the not too far distance.
