Thaya

Thaya in Břeclav

The Thaya ( Czech Dyje ) is a tributary of the Morava. It has a length of 235.4 kilometers and a tortuous course. It runs to a large extent on the border between Austria (Lower Austria ) and Czech Republic ( Moravia ), but is rarely exactly the limit.

Name

The name of the water body is derived from the East Germanic term * Dūhja, which means " mud " or "swamp " means.

Geography

Headwaters

She has two source rivers, the German Thaya and the Moravian Thaya, which unite in Raab.

German Thaya

The German Thaya Waldviertel rises in the near Schweiggers at an altitude of 657.5 m and flows through Vitis, Schwarzenau, Waidhofen an der Thaya Thaya, Doberman Berg, and Karl Stein an der Thaya. It is the longer of the two source rivers.

Moravian Thaya

The Moravian Thaya ( Czech Moravian Dyje ) rises in the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands. The river carries along Žatec and Dačice to Austria, where they united in Raab with Deutsche Thaya.

Middle reaches

In the middle reaches of the river Thaya has dug deep into the landscape ( height difference of the slopes about 100 m). This distinctive profile has the construction of numerous castles and palaces highly favored over its banks ( Karlstejn Castle, the ruins Kollmitz, Drossendorf, Hardegg Castle, Ruin Kaja, castle Raab an der Thaya ). In the Frain Vranovska Přehrada is ( Frainer dam ). In the area around Hardegg, both Austrian and Czech side, the Thaya Valley National Park was established.

Underflow

Accidents and flood

In May 1936 drowned in the sinking of the overloaded cable ferry in Neumühl 31 children from Rakwitz on her school trip.

Once back in March 2006, the Thaya had led the highest flood in the last 100 years, the level of both the German and the Moravian Thaya rose on 30 June 2006 by heavy rains in the upper reaches within a few hours at night to the highest value of floods since 300 to 400 years. This 1500 building were flooded in about 70 places. Hardest hit was the town of Raab an der Thaya, where the water level of the German Thaya rose to 6.60 meters.
