The 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic

The 12 Cellists are a cello ensemble from Berlin, consisting of the members of the cello section of the Berlin Philharmonic and mainly plays modern music.

History

1972 has been requested with the Berlin Philharmonic, whether their cellist would be willing to perform a long no longer performed work of Julius Klengel for 12 cellos. After this performance, it was decided to continue to play together. There was very little repertoire, a member approached the composer Boris Blacher. He wrote the dance suite blues, Espanola and Rumba philharmonica for twelve cellos solo.

Since there is the cello section of the Berlin Philharmonic from 13 cellists since 1991, the ensemble is greater. However, the cellist continues to play only twelve of us, so that one member exposed.
