David O'Dell has inherited from his father the farm owned by the family for generations and incurred debts of over $ 200,000. Meanwhile, the second mortgage is on land and at risk of losing the farm. Brother Tommy gets a bookkeeper on the farm, which has helped the one-armed Johnny Vance to keep his farm. The accountant turns out to be eccentric man drinking tons of beer. He begins to investigate David's books, said he expects head instead of using a calculator. In the end, he has at hand several options for David. He could put the farm on fire, and where the animals would be sold before or brought to safety. The farm could then be prepared so that a burned to the animals probably acts. In order that no suspicion is drawn, but also David's dog would have to be killed because no one would accept such a coolness to reduce debt. The fire would help but break down only a portion of the debt.

About elaborate calculations makes clear the accountant David that his wife is unfaithful. She drives a week with the children in the city, taking with it $ 100, but ended up getting $ 27.99 and thus has enough money left over to pay for a motel room. Then the accountant makes further proposals to repay debt. For health insurance David could lose an arm and two legs and get as money - it is now clear why Johnny Vance has only one arm. Because David but both legs need to be able to run the farm can, the accountant makes the suggestion that either David or his wife could die. The life insurance policy would ensure that not only the debt would be paid off, but the farm could be renovated. While David begins to think about this option, Tommy responded indignantly. The accountant explains why him the salvation of the farm is so important: According to his theory, there is a conspiracy, according to which the rural is to be wiped out. In return, all consortia have been formed to bring the farmers only about their money and their identity until they become pseudo - farmers at the end, however, think that they still live traditionally.

The next day, Tommy leads the accountant to form a bridge. Both look down at the stream where David's body lies. He killed himself to save the farm. The accountant has previously seen this, especially since David's wife with Tommy unfaithful, who has now to shape the future of the farm. When Tommy starts to schedule the expected money already for a new truck, the accountant responded vigorously: It is important to get the farm and bring it to David's children to appreciate the rural life. They should learn to love Tommy as her own father. If he does not stick to the rules, the accountant will return and look at your numbers accurately. At the end of the accountant for his work $ 27.99 calculated - a pure coincidence, as he says.
