The Action

The action was in the 1960s, a British music group from Kentish Town, North London.

Band History

The band initially joined as a side group under the name The Boyfriends for Sandra Barry. Later it was Sandra Barry and the Boys. The only single this line-up "Really Gonna Shake / When We Get Married " - was not commercially successful.

After "Sandra" a solo career started, worked "The Boys " briefly with producer Kenny Lynch (who later became the " Small Faces " produced ) together. Both sides of their debut single produced by him, but again it was not a great sales success.

1965 The Boys called for in The Action. It was the time when Pete Watson got in as second guitarist in the band. The group lived on the excellent renditions of Motown material and a balanced mix of R & B and Soul. Reggie King supported this with its fine white soul voice.

The band enjoyed a strong mod - followers. "The Action " finally reached the attention of George Martin, the Beatles producer. He undertook the band for his then freshly founded AIR Studios. The debut of the band were two Soul standards on Parlaphone Records: "Land of 1,000 Dances " with the B-side, " In My Lonely Room" - a " Martha and the Vandellas ' song. The next single was again a cover version of a Motown Songs: "I'll Keep On Holding On " by "The Marveletes ". These two singles showed the strong potential of the band. Reggie Kings voice in conjunction with the strong harmonies of the band were extraordinary. The third single, " Baby You've Got It " was the B- side of "Since I Lost My Baby". "The Action " were at that time one of the most sought after groups in the city and were dropped as the opening act for The Who, because they already had it too good.

The fourth single was the first of two original compositions. There were pure pop songs that drew heavily on the harmonic qualities of the band. They were also an expression of a change of style: Off Soul, towards the American West Coast sound. This change may justify the non-appearance of the planned debut album, which was based more on the old material with which the band did not like to identify.

The fifth and last at the same time "The Action " single was "Shadows and Reflections " which showed the harmony possibilities of the band at their best again. Demos for an album with the name " Brain" were recorded, but never released. Today, the recording in the sampler " Rolled Gold " are available.

Pete Watson left the group in 1966. He was replaced by Ian Whiteman, who was in turn replaced the following year by Martin Stone. Martin Stone stopped a few months with the band, Ian Whiteman returned. The group called itself now Azoth, unsuccessfully reformed again as "The Action " and finally Mighty Baby.

Reggie King recorded an album for United Artists and Alan King got in at Ace, who had a number-one hit in the U.S. with "How Long".

Recently, the band reformed and played a series of concerts. Liam Gallagher and Robbie Williams asked for autographs. One of her fans, Phil Collins, flew in from Geneva to play with the band "at the 100 Club".
