The Assassination of the Duke of Guise, a French historical film from 1908 about the circumstances of the death of Henri I de Lorraine, duc de Guise.

Background

The silent film by Frères Lafitte was the first film in the world, got an original music. The music was composed especially for the film by Camille Saint- Saëns. At any screening of this film then the music was played to the corresponding scene. Until then, it was common for the silent films of musicians - were improvised musical accompaniment or accompanied - mostly at the piano.

At that time it was for the moviegoers a sensation to watch a movie with such an outstanding cast: The film starred well-known actors of the Comédie Française, the musical accompaniment recorded on phonograph records came from Camille Saint- Saëns ( 1835-1921 ). But the pantomime -like performance of the actors and the rigid camera prove obvious that the movie production and acting completely different requirements than the theater. Thus, this film was a milestone in film history.
