The Bachelor Party

The bachelor party is an American movie released in 1957 by Delbert Mann from a story by Paddy Chayefsky.

Action

The young accountant Charlie Samson strives to make something of his life. He attended night school in order to retrain and consequently to ascend the corporate ladder. One day he learns of his wife Helen that she is expecting a child. Charlie and Helen live a frugal life and can not afford big jumps. Now that Helen is pregnant, both of them will have to cut even more. And so Charlie is quite dejected mood as he breaks one evening to the bachelor party of his colleague Craig Arnold. Craig wants to get married the next day, and Charlie will be his witness Traut.

The five men sitting in plenty of alcohol together and rant about old times, about experiences in the war, and try to fool each other, how far they have brought it in life and what great, successful and all the guys they are. But the life-lies crumble served up all too quickly. None of the middle-aged men is really happy with his life, and so the evening ends in a neat hangover. Charlie wants to draw conclusions from the lessons learned and to break out of his life so far.

The men decide then to go on pub crawl, where Charlie with a girl anbandelt that is so completely different from his Helen. He has an affair with this fascinating existentialist not averse. The train around the houses eventually changed the lives of all five colleagues. Arnold, the drunken husband -to-be, starts with each glass of alcohol more to his decision to marry the next day to doubt. The independence vorlebende provocative, but in reality lonely buddy Eddie flirts as of uncontrolled - as hopeless, even with unattractive women. For Charlie, even this night is a night of deep insights. He starts to doubt and frustration of last evening into perspective and realizes that his past life was not so bad as he thought so far. And he knows now sure he loves his wife. The child, Helen, and he expected, will give his life a new meaning.

Production Notes

The bachelor party was premiered on April 10, 1957. In Germany, the film was still in the same year.

The exterior shots were taken in New York City. The Filmbauten come from Ted Haworth, Edward G. Boyle of the equipment. The costumes were designed by Mary Grant. Chayefsky also took over the production line of the film.

Carolyn Jones received for her performance as a bar acquaintance Charlie Samson 1958 Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Criticism

Reclams film leader wrote to The Bachelor Party: " Although man and Chayefsky had a big success for her film Marty in Hollywood, but they turned back to the television, where they released together the teleplay The bachelor party; and reenlisted both Hollywood for a movie version of the game. The bachelor party is harder and more realistic than Marty. We see men who are strained from the stress of working life, the too little to make money that are sick and consumed early. The film shows how they intend to deceive themselves and how the hangover makes them clairvoyant. "
