The Bassarids

The Bassariden is a literary opera by Hans Werner Henze based on The Bacchae of Euripides tragedy.

The libretto by WH Auden and Chester Kallman, completed on 28 September 1965.

The premiere took place during the Salzburg Festival - a co-production with the Deutsche Oper Berlin - held on August 6, 1966 at the Great Festival Hall, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the choir of the Vienna State Opera under the musical direction of Christoph von Dohnányi with Kostas Paskalis in the role Pentheus, directed by Gustav Rudolf Sellner, features: Filippo Sanjust.
