Game

Essentially it comes to controlling one or more opponents and the occupation of villages, which introduce the only resource of the game, gold,. The gold is used to pay the maintenance for existing units to recruit new units and reconvene units from past missions, the latter is possible only while playing a campaign. Victorious is one if the specified game mission is accomplished, in which the enemy must be defeated about, or is reached the individual campaigns or circular target ( For example, the survival of the protagonist or the decimating a certain number of enemy units).

Fight

During the fight, it is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of their own units in relation to the enemy units, the terrain, and the time of day and use them accordingly.

Units gain experience in combat and get so on in a level system and get better properties. You have vitality points that are displayed openly as well as exactly certain attack and hit probabilities, so that an exact calculation of the probability of the output of the fighting is possible, which is calculated and displayed for the player.

The movement points (abbreviated "BP" mentioned in the unit description) specify how many fields a unit can move in a round. All values are in an actual game situation influenced by factors such as terrain, resistances and adjacent units. A tutorial and a help system to support beginners to learn the game.

Parties

Battle for Wesnoth currently differs in multi -player mode by default six parties, which is optional enemy, friend or oneself. Campaigns can allow units of any parts or combinations of these parties for the player and the opponent in principle, some unit types are available only in campaigns or used there by the opponents. ( In the original campaign, " Heir to the Throne " about playing initially with elves, and later with various human and dwarven units against different depending on the scenario opponents, mainly loyalists, Orcs and Undead. )

  • The rebels consist mainly of elven units, with Ent -like trees, water men and human mages. Many of its initial units have close and long range weapons, which makes them very versatile. Elves are neutral with respect to day and night time and in forests have a high defense force. In other terrain they are usually faster, but weaker than other units.
  • The Knalgan Alliance consists of slow, but tough dwarves with strong melee attack, allied with human outlaws who can fight better under the cover of night. In general, dwarves get a high defense force when they occupy hills or mountains. Dwarves can move in caves also better than any other unit and are nocturnal and neutral. In open terrain, they are very vulnerable to attack, while their human allies on the same field, but especially in forests have a defensive bonus.
  • The Loyalists: Enclosed are human cavalry, mages and infantry that usually best fight on the day. They are the most diverse party, with more units than any other party except the Knalgan Alliance.
  • The Norsemen ( " Northerner " ), a party of orcs and goblins, trolls, and accompanied by Naga warriors. Their focus is on cheap recruiting, brute force and melee, at night they fight the best. Most units require little experience points to rise, their mobility is on hills at its greatest.
  • The Undead (along with human black magicians and bats ) are sensitive to fire, impact weapons and arcane attacks, but have a high resistance to swords, edged weapons, and especially cold attacks. They rely on easy access to magic and poison attacks. Some units have the ability to draw on the health of their opponents to replenish their own, and most units are immune to poisoning. Unlike the other races, most undead have no character features and no individual names.
  • The Draken ( " Drake " ) are a dragon-like race that fights better on the day. Most can fly and breathe fire. Their allies, the Saurians, fast runners ( sometimes faster than the Draken ), prefer the night and defend themselves better in the Wetlands. Together they have strong sensitivity to cold. Drakes are the most maneuverable party, but their size makes them vulnerable to attacks in any terrain.

History of development

According to information from David White started the development of the game in 2003, and was mainly inspired by the game Master of Monsters. The main design philosophy he used the KISS principle.

Later, more developers joined the project, and in May 2007 contained the indicated in-game list of contributors almost 400 entries. Also relatively well-known authors from the open source community to participate in the development of the game, the founder of the Open Source Initiative Eric S. Raymond or the Linux kernel programmer Rusty Russell.

Possibilities of modifying

Besides the possibility of editing the source code free Wesnoth also offers beginners extensive possibilities of modification: With the map editor to create your own battlefields leave. Without much knowledge of programming, also let in the Wesnoth Markup Language ( WML) create their own units. Advanced, it is also possible with this markup language to program scenarios or campaigns. The published work of many programmers can be integrated into the game as add-ons.

These add- ons are normal parts of campaigns or scenarios, but also offer some completely new concepts: There are a number of different RPG scenarios that dwell on nature appreciation ( the most widely used is probably Extreme Survival ). Also completely new unit should be provided. These add- ons are only partially translated.
