The Bone People

The Bone People ( original English title The Bone People) is a New Zealand novel by Keri Hulme from the year 1984. The book is about how three New Zealanders their place in society and find shows such as the Maori and Pakeha should live together. The book received the 1985 Booker Prize.

Action

The book begins with the fact that the deposited living Kerewin, the silent Simon meets. Although they want to be alone as soon as possible again, keep the bad weather and Simons injuries the woman away from him in front of the door set. In the following, Simon visited them again and again and Kerewin befriends with his adoptive father Joe. In addition to research on Kerewin provides Simons past, which is in the dark. During this time, Joe Simon strikes twice, after the first time Kerewin becomes suspicious and after the second time, she finds out that the father abused his son. To prevent this in the future she takes the two on vacation where there is a battle between the two adults, these gains Kerewin, the Japanese martial art studied. The two agreed to come that Joe Simon just may beat with Kerewins consent. Although Kerewin Joe still does not trust, sparkle all good to go until Simon makes a gruesome discovery, he wants to talk about it with Kerewin, but they will not listen, Simon finally destroyed her beloved guitar. He continues his work of destruction in the city and is finally brought the police back to Joe. Kerewin and Joe decide that Simon must be punished. However, Simon is now rising for the first time and both he and Joe need to be hospitalized. Now the second part of the book in which are three separate starts, Joe goes to jail, Kerewin looking for a place to die, since she feels quite some time that she has cancer and Simon initially remains in the hospital. Both Joe and Kerewin be physically and mentally healthy again, with the Maori culture plays a big role. Simon manages all around him make it clear that he wants to go home, what he finds is where Kerewin and Joe are there. So eventually there will be a reunion of the three.

Author

What is noticeable in the book that there are many parallels between the author Keri Hulme, and the main person Kerewin. Both live very lonely, also Kerewin seems exactly like Keri Hulme to be asexual.

Original Title

The original English title " The Bone People" refers to " back to basics " in a New Zealand phrase "back to the bones" which means something like, " bones" here refers also to the ancestors, or to their graves.
