The Book of Five Rings

The Book of Five Rings (五 轮 书jap Gorin no Sho ) is a Japanese book on martial arts strategy, written by the ronin Miyamoto Musashi from about 1643 to 1645. In the book the author describes in five chapters, the beings and ways of thinking that should have a samurai. Today the book in Japan in addition to the Hagakure of Yamamoto Tsunetomo and the Heiho Kaden Sho ( The Way of the Samurai ) by Yagyu Munenori again popular and a standard work strategic " warfare" to the free market for managers.

Several modern interpretations and based on the book of Five Rings works discuss how the application of the mindsets and attitudes which describes Miyamoto in his work, success in business or bring in project management.

Miyamoto describes the base of the sword fight in five parts ( five " rings " ):

  • The Book of Earth - Fundamentals of the warrior path like look, physical attitude, mental attitude
  • The Book of Water - Basic requirements
  • The Book of Fire - The battle
  • The Book of the Wind - peculiarities of other schools
  • The Book of the Void - Intuition is as important as intellectual learning the rules
