The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929 film)

The Bridge of San Luis Ray is an American adaptation of the novel by Thornton Wilder from 1929. How many productions from the period of transition from silent films to talkies, was not yet converted in many cinemas in the U.S. on the new technology were, there was both a sound version and a version as a silent film for the rental.

Action

Peru, 1714. The Suspension Bridge of San Luis Rey, which dates from the time of de Incas, breaks and tears five people to death. Brother Juniper examines the background that led to the accident, and finally reports to the viceroy of Peru. In flashbacks, the fates of five victims are told, who were at the time of the accident on the bridge.

Background

Thornton Wilder won the Pulitzer Prize in the division for his second novel, published in 1927 novel 1928. The film version of 1929 should follow two more adaptations in the years 1944 and 2004.

Awards

At the Academy Awards in 1930 (April), the film won an Oscar in the category Best Art Direction. It should be the first of eleven Oscars, the Cedric Gibbons wins during his career and for which he was nominated 39 times.
