The Broadway Melody is one of the first sound film musical that premiered on February 1, 1929. Debuted was the film of Metro -Goldwyn- Mayer, that film studio, which should evolve in the course of the 1930s the most successful production company for films of this genre. The screenplay, based on a story by Edmund Goulding, was written by Norman Houston and James Gleason. It was directed by Harry Beaumont.

The songs were written for the most part by Nacio Herb Brown (music) and Arthur Freed (lyrics ). The classic " Give My Regards To Broadway ", which can be heard in the opening credits of the film was composed by George M. Cohan; another song comes from Willard Robison.

Action

The plot includes a love story of three people trying their luck on Broadway. The two sisters Queenie and Hank Mahoney Mahoney come to Broadway to help their friend Eddie Kearns while rehearsing a dance number for a produced by Francis Zanfield show. In the further course of action Eddie initially fell in love with Hank, but later in Queenie. There is a dispute between the two sisters, but ends happily.

Background

Since many cinemas at that time still had no or only inadequate sound film equipment, a 1929 silent film version was released.

The film was commercially very successful. He set new standards and is now considered first full-length sound film musical.

Awards

The film received an Academy Award in 1930 for Best Picture.
