The Cambridge History of English and American Literature

The Cambridge History of English and American Literature was published in 1907-1921 for the first time. It consists of 18 volumes with 303 chapters on more than 11,000 pages long and was written by 171 leading scholars of the early 20th century.

The chapters on English literature beginning with the Old English poems and end with the late Victorian era. The American literature is described by the colonial period and the Revolutionary War to the early 20th century. When published, the Cambridge History was the hitherto most important work of literary history.
