The Case of Charles Dexter Ward ( Original title The Madness Out of Time and The Case of Charles Dexter as Ward published) is a horror novel by HP Lovecraft. It was written in 1927 and published until after his death in 1941 in the magazine Weird Tales. This story is one of the first works of him playing in his hometown of Providence.

The main character of Charles Dexter Ward is a young man from a well-known family, which disappears after a long period of spiritual confusion and mysterious physical changes from a mental hospital. The main part of the story is about the search of the family doctor of the Wards, Doctor Marinus Bicknell Willett, who ' pursues strange changes the reasons for Charles. As Willet finds out that Charles was only concerned with the locating the grave of his highly discredited ancestor Joseph Curwen since the past few months, Willet begins more about this dark and feared by his contemporaries people out. The traditions by Curwen was a rich merchant, who has created a leading monopoly on imported goods in Providence. His sinister reputation was due to his strange behavior, hanging around at night in the cemeteries of the city and pursue alchemy on a far remote from the city farm house. Screams and demonic incantations on his secluded estate, as well as its ability to be not aged even after decades, Curwen leave gradually the reputation of a dark sorcerer, who is shunned by his fellow human beings, attain. The book is characterized by many very interesting letters, documents and anecdotes that are discovered by Willet and also by Ward with time. The action period changes during the event between the present ( around 1920 in the book) and the eighteenth century.
