The Chiffons

The Chiffons was an American girl group of the 1960s.

History

The group was founded in 1960 by three classmates, the James Monroe High School visited together in the Bronx in New York City. The then four- year-old Judy Craig sang the lead vocals, with her formed the then thirteen -year-old Patricia Bennett and Barbara Lee the group. By chance they met Ronnie Mack know who gave them a recording contract with Big Deal Records. They first recorded a cover version of the song Tonight's The Night of the Shirelles. On September 12, 1960 both singles reached the pop charts, but the version of the Chiffons reached only place 76 more plates appeared on the Big Deal label no longer, and the group had to wait for their next record release two years. During this time she worked as a backing vocal group at a recording session. 1962, the group released one single on Wildcat Records and another single in rprs Records. Both records were unsuccessful.

In the fall of 1962, Ronnie Mack tried his song He's So Fine at the newly formed production company Bright Tunes, which had been founded by members of the group The Tokens, accommodate. Liked the song and Mack should find a good singing group for the board recording. He added the Chiffons to a fourth singer Sylvia Peterson. In December 1962, the single was released titled Oh My Lover as a B-side. In February 1963, they reached with the song He's So Fine # 1 on the U.S. pop charts The single spent four weeks at No. 1 and also took four weeks the first place, the R & B charts. George Harrison was later alleged to have copied this song in his single My Sweet Lord, after which he spent two thirds of his royalties to the original songwriter Ronnie Mack had to pay after a trial. Harrison's work is regarded today as the most famous unintentional plagiarism in music history.

During the follow- Single Lucky Me was a complete flop, they came out with One Fine Day, which came to 5th place, again in the top 10 The title, a composition by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, was also produced by the token. The single was released in the RB charts at No. 6 and in the UK at number 29

At the same time published the Chiffons on Rust Records, a sub-label of Laurie Records plates under the group name The Four Pennies. However, their singles My Block and When The Boy 's Happy ( The Girl 's Happy Too) only reached number 67 and 95 on the pop charts.

During the year 1963, the Chiffons occurred in the prestigious TV shows of the time: American Bandstand, Shindig and Hullabaloo. In the fall and winter of 1963 had the Chiffons with A Love So Fine and I Have A Boyfriend again two short-lived Top 40 hits. The title I Have A Boyfriend was composed by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and the tokens and produced by the token.

In the phase of the "British Invasion" in 1964 and 1965 the Chiffons reach only a few minor hits like Sailor Boy and Nobody Knows What's Goin 'On (In My Mind But Me ). In the summer of 1966 she had with Sweet Talkin ' Guy their last Top 10 hit. Although arrived in the course of 1966, two other singles, Out Of This World and Stop, Look And Listen, on lower chart courts, but the success of the group times were over. While still appeared until 1969 four more singles at Laurie Records, but were unsuccessful, as the single Secret Love in 1969 and 1970, BTP Records So Much In Love on the label Buddah Records. A comeback attempt mid-1970s, was discontinued after two unsuccessful single releases on the Laurie label.
