The Chile Pepper Institute

The Chile Pepper Institute Center for Chile Education ( briefly Chile Pepper Institute) is located somewhere on the New Mexico State University ( NMSU ) in Las Cruces Research Institute. It was founded in 1992 and is dedicated to teaching, research and knowledge archiving of the genus capsicum (Capsicum ); in particular, the sharp variation Capsicum chinense.

The Institute is subordinate to the "College of Agriculture and Home Economics" and is directed by Paul Bosland.

The cultivation of peppers was already operated since 1888 at the NMSU, initially led by Fabian Garcia. In 1913 he bred the variety " No New Mexico. 9 " the first own brand of NMSU, the valid publication of the description of the variety, but was only 1921. Considered basis of all available today chillies of the" New Mexican Chili ".

An assessment with chili -growing farmers in New Mexico in 1998 showed that about 50% of the chilli acreage of the state with varieties that were bred at the NMSU was planted.

Awards and prizes

The 1975 presented Chilisorte ' NuMex Big Jim' was a confirmed length of 13.5 inches recorded (approx. 34.5 cm) as the longest chilli in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records. For the breeding of complete sharpness free Jalapeño cultivar ' NuMex Primavera ' was the head of the Institute Paul Bosland 1999 Ig Nobel Prize.
