The Courier-Mail

The Courier - Mail is a daily newspaper published in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia. The newspaper is part of the News Corporation and is published from Monday to Saturday in tabloid format. The editorial offices of the newspaper are located in Bowen Hills, a northern suburb of Brisbane. The paper is printed in Murarrie east of the city.

History

The writer Sidney Lyons came in 1846 from Sydney to Brisbane and had the intention of founding a newspaper here, probably influenced by John Dunmore Lang, who had brought Lyons to emigrate to Australia. Sidney Lyons teamed up with James Swan, a printer, who had previously worked on Lang's newspaper The Colonialist in Sydney. The two men settled at the junction of Queen Street, Brisbane Albert Street, Brisbane, in a building that became known as the North Star Hotel later.

The first issue of the Moreton Bay Courier with a circumference of four pages was published on Saturday, June 20, 1846, Lyons was the editor and publisher of the Swan. The newspaper was published once a week on Saturdays.

After about 18 months, both fell into an argument when it came to the orientation of the newspaper. So it was, for example, does not have the transportation habits of prisoners and their accommodation agreement, so that Lyons took over sole control of the newspaper the end of 1847. However, Lyons ran into financial difficulties, so that Swan took over the newspaper alone. Finally, James Swan sold the newspaper to Thomas Blacket Stephens.

As Stephens took over the newspaper in May 1861, he soon turned it into a daily newspaper to the Courier, which became the Brisbane Courier in 1864. In June and July 1868, he founded the Brisbane Newspaper Company and transferred all rights to the Brisbane Courier on this company. He was the Managing Director until his retirement from public life in November 1873, when the newspaper was sold. John James Knight was the chief editor of the Brisbane Courier from 1906 to 1916 later became managing director and editor of all publications of the company.

The first edition of The Courier - Mail published on 28 August 1933 after The Brisbane Courier and The Daily Mail, which was first published on October 3, 1903 merged with each other. This merger is due to the world economic crisis, which was preparing both newspapers financial losses.

The Courier - Mail has the fourth-highest circulation of all daily newspapers in Australia. In June 2006, the average paid weekday circulation had a height of 224 689 copies, the Saturday edition was sold 326 767 times.
