The Crumbs on the Table

The crumbs on the table is an animal tale (ATU 106). It is in the Children's and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm from the 5th edition of 1843 instead 190 (KHM 190) on Swiss German and comes from Moriz Haupt's magazine for German antiquity, where Wilhelm Wackernagel it in 1843 published ( legends and tales from Aargau, No. 4, pp. 36-37 ).

The rooster pushes the chickens to peck him crumbs from the table, because the woman is gone. When they join finally, she comes and beats them. The chickens say: " Ga, ga, ga, ga, ga, ga, ga - we have said! " The rooster laughs: " Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha - I did but know! "

Interpretation

The Tale apparently aimed at the characterization of blatant cock, anxious chickens and on the imitation of their sounds. The diminutives speak for children as addressees. Wilhelm Grimm took over the Aargau dialect text almost verbatim.
