The Day of the Dolphin (orig. The Day of the Dolphin ) is an American science - fiction thriller from 1973. Directed by Mike Nichols. As model for the novel " A rational animal " by the French writer Robert Merle.
Action
The scientist Dr. Jake Terrell and his wife Maggie train their attempt dolphins alpha and beta on learning the human language. The experiment, which is being pursued in high government circles with great interest, due one day in the kidnapping of the two animals.
During the rescue efforts, the scientists couple uncovers a dastardly plot: Animals should be used to perpetrate a bomb attack on the yacht of the U.S. president. Terrell, however, it succeeds at the last moment to release the dolphins on the boat of the conspirators.

Filmdienst: An unusual mix of animal film, political thriller and melodrama, which develops into the undemanding but entertaining conversation.

- The plot is very different from the literary text and, together with this, only the basic idea.
- The film was originally to be directed by Roman Polanski. While Polanski in London looked for locations, but his wife Sharon Tate was murdered and Polanski withdrew from the project.
