The Day That Never Comes is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica, the fortieth single by the band and the first of which appeared in 2008 studio album Death Magnetic. The Day That Never Comes was released for radio and as a digital download on 21 August 2008.

Music style

Like the previous ballads and slow songs of Metallica, this is the fourth track of the album. The intro starts with clean guitars in the verses, while the chorus is accompanied by distorted guitars. The pace is accelerating and the song moves gradually to fast guitar playing and in a long solo by Kirk Hammett; a construction of the One and Fade to Black is comparable to the. The end of the song is how the aforementioned ballads, purely instrumental with many melodies, a solo and chord progressions.

A music video for the song was filmed in the desert outside of Los Angeles, California on 31 July 2008 under the leadership of the Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg. Premiere was on the official page of the band on 1 September 2008 at midnight.

The video shows two experiences of a soldier of the United States Marine Corps in operations abroad. First, the driving of the Humvee Marines is stopped by an explosion. After the crew has gone to cover, looking for attackers, one of them noticed that he was injured. The protagonist makes first aid and calls for reinforcements. While the casualty is finally brought to safety by a helicopter, it is indicated that it may be his last flight.

The video below is derived in a similar situation about where the soldier with other comrades go with a vehicle again, and is stopped by a civilian. This whirls around with a jumper wire in the air to indicate that his Yugo does not start without help. The soldiers suspect an ambush, surround the car of the person seeking help and save the situation. This is particularly singled out the uncertainty of the main character, who has already experienced the first situation. The Marines discovered in a car a woman, and urge them to get out. The Clothed with a burqa woman gets out and walks over to the soldiers, who must now make a quick hazard assessment. He decides to lower his gun, and ordered his companions to do the same. The Americans help the man finally managed to start the car and the lead actor staring into the sky.
