The Dell (Southampton)

Southampton FC

  • Games of Southampton FC (1898-2001)

The The Dell at the Milton Road in Southampton was from 1898 to 2001 the home of the English football club FC Southampton.

History

On 3 September 1898, the football stadium was inaugurated with the opening match against Brighton United. The game ended 4-1 for Southampton. The stadium was built for around £ 10,000 by George Thomas. 1929 The Dell was expanded and increased the capacity to around 30,000 seats. The reason for this expansion was a fire on the east stand, which had been caused by a cigarette.

The final game in the venue was on 19 May 2001 between FC Southampton - instead of Arsenal ( 3-2 ) and in the same year, the stadium was demolished. On the property today is a residential building complex. The Southampton FC now plays its home games at St. Mary's Stadium.
