The Diary of Ma Yan

The Diary of Ma Yan (马燕 日记) describes the struggles and hopes of a Chinese schoolgirl on the land in the province of Ningxia (宁夏), where the parents have to pay for the school fees of their children.

Ma Yan (马燕) told here about their school hours ( Chinese, English, music, sports ...) and reported in the schools customary corporal punishment. She portrays the hard life of privation in the country in northwest China. When she is twelve, find their dreams to an end: your parents, very poor farmers lack the resources, they continue to leave to go to school. In desperation, she writes in several books down her grief.

The French journalist Pierre Haski, at this time correspondent for the French daily newspaper " Libération " in Beijing, which had to do because of a report in the area, this booklet of Ma Yan's mother has been sent. His assistant, He Yanping, was responsible for the translation. Thereafter, the notes were published under the title " Le journal de Ma Yan " in France and later translated into 17 languages.

Enfants du Ningxia

The subsequently launched organization " Enfants du Ningxia " ( EdN ) now supports not only Ma Yan, but now more than 140 fellows and is still trying to collect on events to raise funds for the scholarship in Ningxia. EdN offers three -month internships in Beijing. Ma Yan is now a student in Paris.
