The Dream Academy

The Dream Academy was a British folk-rock and pop music band that was particularly successful in the 1980s. In addition to the singer and guitarist Nick Laird - Clowes, the multi-instrumentalist Kate St. John belonged to (oboe and other instruments) and Gabriel Gilbert (keyboards) the band. She succeeded with the Life in a Northern Town a One Hit Wonder.

Band History

The trio was found in 1983 together. The self-titled debut album was released in 1985 by Warner Bros., co-produced by David Gilmour. The single release Life in a Northern Town is a tribute to Nick Drake and reached number 15 in the UK the UK Top 40, the music magazine Spin counted it in 2010 to the most spectacular one hit wonders of the past 25 years. In the U.S., the single was released in 1986 and reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 With the second single The Love Parade, the group was unable to match the commercial success. After the 1987 album Remembrance Days, published first it was quiet around the trio until 1991 a comeback attempt with the album A Different Kind of Weather started. The album flopped and The Dream Academy broke up shortly thereafter. Kate St. John launched a career as a solo artist. In 2000 he recorded a best-of album.

The " Ah hey ma ma ma " from the chorus of Life in a Northern Town was used in 1997 by Dario G. for his dance hit Sunchyme. A successful cover version of the song took the American country band Sugarland on in 2008.
